Frequently asked questions

Specifications

What are the minimum requirements for Clicker (Win/Mac)?

Clicker works on Windows and Mac computers.

  • Windows specifications: Windows 11.
  • Mac specifications: Sequoia (15) or newer.

What are the minimum requirements for the Clicker Apps (iPad/Chromebook)?

  • iPad specifications: iPadOS 17 or newer.
  • Chromebook specifications: Chrome OS 86 or newer, with Google Drive enabled.

What’s the difference between Clicker and the Clicker Apps?

Both Clicker (Windows/Mac) and the Clicker Apps (iPad/Chromebook) include the core child-friendly word processing features that Clicker is known for, including speech feedback, word prediction, Voice Notes, picture support, mind-mapping tools and the ability to provide topic-specific Sentence Sets, Connect Sets and Word Banks (whether these be the ready-made ones we provide or resources you create yourself). Certain Clicker features are only available in the Windows/Mac version: this currently includes Cloze and matching activities.

Subscriptions

How does the subscription work?

Many schools are using a combination of devices to support their learners. You can install Clicker on your Windows/Mac machines and download the Clicker Apps on your iPads and Chromebooks.

Is the licensing per user or per device?

A subscription to Clicker provides you with three-year licenses to the software and apps on a per device basis. Clicker Apps for Chromebook licenses are per user.

Do I need to include teachers and TAs when deciding what subscription I need?

Our subscriptions already include staff licenses. The Flexi-subscription can be installed on all compatible staff devices, and the one-to-one support subscription includes one license for the pupil and one for their supporting adult.

When I purchase Clicker, how long is the subscription?

All our Clicker subscriptions are for three years.

How do I get my software?

You will receive an email from us with all the details on how to register and activate your subscription. We will send this email to your subscription manager (please note that you can have multiple subscription managers). If you are unable to find this email, please call us and we can resend this information to you.

When does the subscription for Clicker start?

After you register your subscription, you can activate this at any point within the first month. After the first month has lapsed, your subscription will start automatically.

Can I move the licenses if we change the devices we are using?

Yes – you can manage your licenses, including transferring them to different devices, via the Subscription Management system. Full details on this process can be found here.

Why don’t you sell 5 or 10-user licenses for Clicker anymore?

We did a lot of research and customer interviews before making changes to our subscription model, and what we found was that the vast majority of 5 and 10-license subscribers really struggled to meaningfully embed the software in school.

In reality, having a limited number of licenses created technical headaches for support teams as they tried to move licenses on and off devices as needed. Teachers were unable to plan ahead with the certainty that pupils would have access to Clicker on that particular day or in that particular lesson. Often, teacher access wasn’t accounted for when allotting the licenses, which meant the majority of staff weren’t able to become familiar with the software or use it regularly, which puts a lot of pressure on one or two staff members to keep that momentum going. As children who relied on Clicker moved into different areas of the building, or out of intervention groups, or into different year groups, Clicker wasn’t always available or familiar to the new staff members supporting them, which caused stress and halted progress. And when new cohorts entered the school or unexpected arrivals joined mid-term, there were no extra licenses to support those children who would have really benefited from Clicker.

Ultimately, schools were not seeing value for money from this subscription type, and children were not getting the consistent support they needed.

Why is the Flexi-subscription your standard model?

The Flexi-subscription isn’t tied to specific pupils or fixed numbers, giving you the freedom to scale usage up or down and adapt your teaching to emerging needs in real-time.

Our Flexi model is designed to remove practical barriers to use by:

  • allowing Clicker to be available across school devices - removing access bottlenecks and supporting needs-led use
  • providing home access – this gives pupils consistency and staff the ability to mark and plan without being tied to school devices
  • including unlimited online training - staff can build skills at their own pace and return for refreshers whenever needed
  • supporting whole staff familiarity – when Clicker isn’t limited to a few devices, it doesn’t rely on a small group of users to keep everything going

We believe that Assistive Technology works best when it’s part of a school’s universal offering. This doesn’t mean that it should be used with every pupil, or all of the time, but that the option is widely available and easily accessible, as and when needed.

SENsible SENCo founder Abigail Hawkins summarises this inclusive approach really well:

“When a tool is seen as something designed for “one or two pupils”, every cost will feel disproportionate. It becomes a specialist purchase for a very small group of children.

When the same tool is understood as part of universal classroom provision and adaptive teaching, the conversation changes quite dramatically. Tools that support writing, organisation, reading access, communication, or planning rarely benefit only a handful of pupils. They often support a much wider group of learners who struggle quietly without a label, alongside those with identified needs.

When supportive technologies begin to be viewed as part of the everyday classroom toolkit rather than a niche intervention, the investment tends to make far more sense.”

What’s also incredibly powerful about this approach is that it normalises the use of AT as an authentic and equally valid path to learning success. When children who find writing difficult see the children who don’t also using Clicker, and when the use of assistive technology is modelled by the adults in the classroom (because which of us doesn’t use word prediction on our phones or spell checkers before we hit ‘SEND’), what they are doing doesn’t feel ‘special’ or ‘other’, it’s just ‘writing’.

We work with schools across the country, of all shapes and sizes, who are seeing fantastic results with their Flexi-subscriptions, and we’d be very happy to explore how this would look in your setting – please book in a free Discovery Call at a time that suits you.

What is included in a Flexi-subscription?

The Flexi-subscription enables you to install Clicker on all of your school computers and have the Clicker Apps on all your iPads and/or Chromebooks. The subscription also includes home access to Clicker/Clicker Apps for your pupils, teachers and teaching assistants.

What if I need to purchase Clicker as part of a specific child’s funding allocation?

If you would like to purchase Clicker for a single child as part of their EHCP, IDP, or CSP provision, our One‑to‑One Support subscription is the best option.

What the subscription includes:

  • One Clicker licence for the pupil
  • One Clicker licence for their facilitator or teacher
  • Full access to the software for three years

Pricing

Can I buy Clicker using a purchase order (PO)?

Absolutely – we will then invoice the school when we email over the registration and installation information.

Are there any additional costs for technical support or updates?

No – during your subscription period you will be provided with free technical support and any updates to Clicker and/or the Clicker Apps will also be provided free of charge.

Can I buy a one-year subscription?

We have chosen to make Clicker a three-year subscription rather than a one-year subscription because we know that schools need reassurance that any provision they invest in for their pupils will be available to them for the next few years, without having to worry about whether there will be enough to cover it in next year’s budget! The three-year subscription provides schools with the time they need to effectively set-up, install and implement Clicker, and ensures that they benefit from all the exciting new updates and additions we plan to release during this period.

We do however have the option of a 3-part payment, enabling you to pay for a Clicker subscription in three annual instalments. Please contact us if you would like more details.

Do you provide special pricing if all the schools in our Trust want to use Clicker?

Yes, we can put together a bespoke price for schools in your Trust. Contact us with details of the subscriptions you require and the number of schools in your Trust. We can also talk to you about DocsPlus, our secondary school word processor for students who find writing challenging.

I work in a federation of schools – can we buy a subscription for Clicker and share it?

No, our subscriptions are provided on a ‘per school’ basis. If you are designated as separate schools (meaning that each school has a unique DfES/SEED number), then each school needs its own subscription.

Renewals

When does the subscription for Clicker start?

When you resubscribe, we simply add the three years to your current subscription. This means you can re-subscribe at any time to take advantage of the early bird discount.

When does our subscription end?

Clicker is a three-year subscription so will end three years after purchase. If you are unsure of when your subscription ends, just contact us on renewals@cricksoft.com and we will be able to let you know your subscription end date.

Will our subscription auto-renew?

In the final year of your subscription, we will be in touch to talk to you about renewing. We know how hectic things can be at school, and so for your convenience we will automatically renew your subscription if we have not been able to speak to you. This will ensure that those pupils who rely on the software to support their learning will not have their access interrupted. If you would like to cancel the subscription, or make a change to it, please contact us.

How much will it cost to renew?

Around 6 months before your subscription ends, we will contact you via email to remind you of your upcoming renewal date and the renewal discount we can offer.

I’m interested in renewing, but our subscription manager has changed/left since we purchased, how do I manage our Clicker licenses?

To change the subscription manager, please contact support with your organisation name, organisation postcode, full name and Google address/Apple ID of the person(s) you wish to add/remove.

Home access to Clicker

We have a Clicker Flexi-subscription; how do we give access to the software for home use?

You will need to share home user licenses via the Subscription Management system. This is a very straightforward process - see the support article here.

With the Clicker Flexi-subscription, can the home access be for iPad or Chromebooks even if we only have Windows computers in school?

Yes – your subscription enables parents and teaching staff to use Clicker on their home devices. If that device is a Windows/Mac computer, you can provide them with the installation instructions for Clicker. If they are using an iPad or Chromebook, they can use the Clicker Apps.

How do I share resources for children to access on their home devices?

There are a variety of ways to share Clicker resources and documents. Take a look at our training tutorials here to help you save, share and print your resources.

I’m a parent and my child’s school does not have a Flexi-subscription. Can you buy Clicker for home use?

Yes – parents can purchase a home user subscription for Clicker, which is the same as the school’s version of the software but offered at a discounted price. This gives you up to two installations of Clicker on your home devices - this could be two licenses for Clicker, two licenses for the Clicker Apps, or one of each – choose whichever combination works best for you.

Please contact us if you’d like to find out more about the Clicker home subscription or place an order.

Is Clicker VAT exempt?

No. Although Clicker is widely used to support learners with special needs, it is also used and sold as a product for children without disabilities, and therefore does not qualify for VAT exemption.

We have some new staff on board – do you have any training they can use?

How do we share Clicker files?

You can share Clicker files in any way you would share other software files you use in school. For Windows/Mac machines this is likely to be via the server. For iPad/Chromebook this is often via email or file sharing platforms like Google Drive, Google Classroom, Dropbox, or OneDrive. See these training resources to find out more.
