Word Activities
Read
The on-screen 'flash cards' can be used with a group or with an individual. Clicker's
speech facility means that the screens can be used both to check word recognition
and as a tool to learn the high-frequency words. The child can read the word
and then check by listening to the speech or can listen first and then repeat
the word.
The screens can be printed out to use as traditional flash cards.
Some ways in which the Word screens can be used are:
- Ask children who may not be able to read the whole word for
the initial phoneme or to spell out the word from the screen.
- Ask a child who is not at the word or letter recognition level
to name the character.
- Ask a child to find the word in the book.
- Ask a child to make a sentence using the word.
- Ask a child to find a picture of the character in the book.
- Delete the word from the screen and ask a child to use the
keyboard to write the word.
- Minimize the Clicker Grid and ask the children to write the
word or part of the word, on their dry-wipe boards.
Spell
This activity is based on five high-frequency words from the text. The target
words are listed on the start screen with links to grids to write the word.
Some ways in which the Spell screens can be used are:
- Read the word and listen to the speech to confirm or for a
prompt.
- Get the children to close their eyes, visualize the word and
recall the letters.
- With their eyes closed get the children to listen to the letters.
- Write the word on a dry-wipe board using the letters displayed
in the grid and compare it to the finished word.
- Minimize the Clicker Grid and ask the children to write the
word or part of the word, on their dry-wipe boards.
- Ask the children to name each letter.
- Discuss the possible letter combinations.
- Think of other words which follow a similar pattern.
- Delete the word in the final grid and try to write it from
the keyboard.
- Ask a child to make a sentence using the word.
- Ask a child to find the word in the printed book.
