I currently have Clicker and New to English, as well as other resources, on my laptop. I take this into the schools to demonstrate to staff who have requested support for newly arrived EAL learners.

The New to English software is currently being used in a number of different ways. For example, some pupils are working through the activities independently, some are participating in “buddy sessions” during lunchtimes and other sessions are taking place in withdrawal where a teaching assistant is using and demonstrating the software to the learner before working through the activities with them.

I have found the series to be of great benefit to the pupils I support. With the CDs presenting information on key localities, including the school and the home, pupils are learning important survival vocabulary. The opportunities for repetition are excellent but never boring - encouraging pupils to engage in the activities again and again, reinforcing the terminology that they are being introduced to.

The materials appeal to all age groups and are being used with pupils from Year 3 through to Year 8. The design of the software is such that there is a motivation for the individuals to learn and the children’s success in completing activities has certainly raised their self esteem.

One individual that I have heard about is a shy girl in one of the schools. She started using the At School materials in a quiet corner with headphones; she is now recording her voice in the activities and sharing these with a friend in the same class. These materials have helped build her confidence which in turn has enabled her to initiate communication and socialise.

My overall observation of the pupils that I have seen and heard about using this software, is that they have they picked up key vocabulary quickly and as a result have become much more confident in using English.
