Clicker Success Story

Apley Wood Primary School

Ellen Smith – Deputy Head

Clicker 7 was first brought to my attention at a SENCo update meeting; another SENCo mentioned to me that they were using Clicker 7 really effectively at her school to support struggling writers in Year 6. As she described the impact Clicker 7 was having, it really resonated with me; certain children popped into my mind that I just knew would really benefit from that kind of personalised literacy support.

We initially purchased a 40-computer license to use with our cohort of children with special needs who need some extra help to get started with their writing; children with dyslexia, struggling spellers, and those pupils who can articulate their ideas very well but find it really tricky to get them down on paper.

Both the staff and the pupils are really enthusiastic about using Clicker – we had some great in-school training from Crick Software which really inspired our teachers and TAs;  they’ve been busy creating new resources ever since!

The children use Clicker in English and Foundation subjects - the teachers are able to create differentiated learning resources for them based on their lesson content, which enable those pupils to access the curriculum and participate in the same way as their peers. We’ve also found Clicker’s new Word Pool feature really useful for those children who have a specific way of misspelling certain words – the fact that we can add these spellings into Clicker to ensure the word predictor suggests the correct word is making targeting spelling intervention a lot simpler.

A big success for us has been using Clicker 7 to support the ‘Big Write’ sessions we have every week. Certain pupils were simply unable to access this activity, or were getting very little down. Now they are producing much more substantial pieces of work, which is having a really positive effect on their confidence and attitude to writing.

We’re really excited to be able to make this valuable teaching and learning tool available to more of our pupils in the future.

We are just about to extend to a full Site License of Clicker 7, having realised its potential to support literacy development more widely across the school. For example, many teachers are using the new Clicker Board mind mapping element of the software on the whiteboard for whole-class topic work. At the beginning of a topic, they will use it to gather pupils’ prior knowledge, and at the end of the topic it’s a fantastic assessment activity for finding out what they’ve learned.
