I started using Clicker with one child with special needs who needed the additional support that Clicker could give to access the curriculum. The child has now left the school, but I am now making use of my skills in using Clicker to work with children in Reception. We have a computer suite which we make lots of use of with the younger children. I take the whole class in to develop both their mouse and hand/eye co-ordination skills, as well as reinforcing key learning objectives.
So, for example we use the targets we have downloaded from the LearningGrids website to help the children to begin using the mouse and clicking in the right area.
We then also use the grids for numeracy, such as counting, odd one out and sequencing. We have also reinforced science and history facts as a whole-class activity as well as looking at sentence structure and grammatical rules.
Alongside this, using the computer suite enables the children to also become independent computer users, and the beauty of using Clicker is that the speech feedback and support ensures that they can work independently.
"...the children love making the computer speak"We have been working as a whole class to write our own sentences. The children click on words in the Clicker grids on the interactive whiteboard to listen to them, reinforcing key vocabulary and high-frequency words. They then come and put the sentence in the correct order. Once they put the full stop in, it reads their sentence back to them. As the children love making the computer speak by putting a full stop at the end of the sentence, this reinforces sentence construction in a way that nothing else can!
