Clicker®
Teaching EAL
Wacky
Sentences
Gillian Blatherwick and Trusha Thakrar work at Rushey Mead Primary
School, Leicester, England. They have been using Clicker to support
learners with English as an Additional Language. An example of their
work is given here.
This Clicker 4 grid 'Wacky Sentences' has been created to support
the learning of Gujerati speakers who are new to English. The Gujerati
sound samples, by design, reflect the level of Gujerati in common
usage by children in Leicester - not formal Gujerati. Wacky sentences
is designed to support new users of English in making simple sentences
based on picture cards that are sometimes a bit wacky! It is not
designed to teach Gujerati.
The Clicker grid was created by Gillian Blatherwick and Trusha
Thakrar, and has been used with children of varying ages. It would
be very simple for users of other languages to record sound samples
to support children with other first languages. It is our intention
to do this when needs arise. Local graphic artist Sailesh Thakrar
kindly created the artwork in the accompanying
pdf file.
