Overview
For children who are learning English as an additional language, Clicker provides valuable support for listening, speaking, reading and writing. Here are just a few ideas:
See the Clicker ‘New to English’ series – it provides English language learning, for new arrivals with lots of Clicker activities that offer support and encourage independence for new arrivals. See the New to English pages for more information.
The ‘New to English’ series has been specially designed in consultation with EAL specialist Dawn Lama. Dawn works for Coventry Local Authority Minority Group Support Services as an Area Manager with special responsibility for the Primary National Strategy English as an Additional Language Programme. For more ideas on using Clicker, see Dawn’s article on using ICT to support young learners who are non-native speakers of English. (Link to Dawn’s article)
Visit our website of free resources at www.LearningGrids.com – see the EAL category for Clicker 5 resources. The grids are ready to use as they are, or you can tailor them to the needs of your children.
And if you want to make your own resources for your English language learners here are just a few ideas:
- Use the labelling templates to get the children to match words to pictures.
- Use any of the modelled sentence templates – write a sentence and then add each word to the individual cells – the children can listen to and see the model before they write their own sentence. This provides a clear structure for language learners as they start to write in English.
- Use the ‘forced order’ sentence templates to help children to understand sentence structure – these ensure that children choose from the correct word class as they build their sentences.
- Use the book making templates to make reading materials at just the right level – drag a picture into the graphic box and type into the text box. The page is then ready for your children – they can listen to the text and read along. They can also record themselves and can listen and edit as often as they like.
Remember that with Clicker you can really support your English language learners – whether they are beginners or are developing their skills, Clicker’s flexibility means that you really can get them started and give curriculum access within your classroom.
