Clicker
4 Review
Literacy
and Learning, April/May 2001
...
Clicker comes with many ready-made grids, but it is very simple
to create and save your own, providing support for children in any
curriculum area.
The
package has also developed rapidly, constantly changing in the light
of fresh requirements from schools. This responsiveness is obviously
a major benefit of a small software company, and leads to close
links between software development and classroom practice.
Clicker
4 is the latest version, and moves significantly closer to the world
of the Internet. It is now fully integrated with the environment
of web pages: any document made with Clicker can be published as
a web page or sent as an email from within the program itself. This
will certainly empower children with special needs to take an active
part in creating multimedia and web materials. Other enhancements
include the use of video, networking facilities and a much larger
range of resources.
Crick
has also started publishing supplementary CD-ROMs. These contain
curriculum materials to work with Clicker 4. I first tried out Find
Out and Write About Animals of Hot Lands. Pictures and factual text
are presented in an easily digestible way. When you have explored
the information you can switch to a writing mode to use a Clicker
Grid to assemble your own text. This is a useful set of resources
for children to work with non-fiction texts
Find
Out and Write About Castles is organised in a similar way. Information
about castles is presented at three different levels with differentiated
grids/writing frames... The general text is spoken in a good, clear
human voice... Find Out and Write About The Ancient Greeks presents
facts about Greek life in an attractive way. Clicker Animations
provides 100 lively animations to use in stories and websites, together
with some ready-made grid activities.
