Dyslexia Contact, May 1999
William
is 12 with a Reading Age of 7:10. He has low self esteem, lacks
confidence and is dependent on others to read for him. He is very
interested in wild life and can talk at length and in detail about
things he has observed or learnt from television programmes.
William
needs some instant success to try and build up his confidence. He
is in a small group for English, where there is access to a multimedia
PC. He uses Clicker 3 with grids on a wildlife theme as well as
his own dictionary grids for more general words that he needs help
with. The cells on the grids have been set so that he can listen
to the word or phrase before sending it to the word processor; he
can type in words from the keyboard that he knows. At any time he
can get the computer to read back what he has written. Working in
this way will enable William to produce much more work more quickly,
and with more independence.
At
home, he has Penfriend on his computer and he is using the screen
reading facility to read difficult text in his encyclopedia cd roms.
Once
he has gained some success, he will be ready to use other programs
to increase his literacy skills. Later he will be able to manage
a small laptop computer with Wordbar to support his learning in
ordinary mainstream classes.
