Focus on Literacy: New products from Crick

The 1999 Education Show will be the showcase for the latest in Crick’s range of innovative software for literacy and special needs. For primary teachers, All My Words is a brand new program which creates instant literacy activities around any text. Those looking for tools to support Special Needs in secondary schools will want to see Wordbar, the flexible, on-screen wordbank. In addition, Clicker 3, winner of the recent Bett 99 Special Needs award, will be on show together with several exciting new ready-to-use resources designed especially for the literacy hour.
All My Words is designed especially for busy teachers in the classroom and provides instant structured literacy activities. These include simple word matching, Look- Cover-Write-Check and cloze procedures. Ideal for use in the literacy hour, All My Words couldn’t be simpler to use. Just type in any text you want, and the activities are instantly created around it. Extensive, ready-to-use examples are supplied, together with over 400 graphics.

Wordbar is the first of a new series of software for older primary and secondary pupils. An ideal aid for children with spelling difficulties or dyslexia, Wordbar is a kind of toolbar which sits at the bottom of the screen and tiles with any word processor. It is also perfect for rapidly accessible subject-specific wordlists. Adding words couldn’t be simpler - you just hold Shift and click on a cell. Wordbar supports software speech and sampled sounds, enabling the user to listen to a word before writing it.

Already widely used in schools and selected by teachers for the Special Needs Award at Bett 99, Clicker 3 is a new software package ideal for teachers working to meet the needs of children across a wide range of ability. Using easy point and click access to the cells, pupils can now write with pictures as well as words. Clicker 3 has its own built-in word processor to read their work back to them. The latest version of Clicker 3 includes Microsoft speech with a choice of three voices, over 2000 graphics and a pictures-as-you-type option. This is an ideal writing tool from simple infant level to more complex extended writing, with lots of usable examples provided.

On show for the first time at the Education Show, the Picture Dictionary and Nursery Rhymes are new resources for use with Clicker 3. These give instantly accessible grids for children to use in reading or writing activities, ideal for groups or individuals. Designed by teachers, they are guaranteed to be teacher-friendly, offering ready-to-use ideas based on the National Literacy Strategy.

Review copies of all three products are available. Please phone Ruth Hamson on 01604-671691.

Prices on all products are available for a variety of licence requirements, starting from £80 for a single user Clicker 3, £60 for All My Words and £50 for Wordbar.
