C6WH19 - Clicker 6 runs slowly

Applies To

  • Clicker 6

Symptoms

Clicker 6 takes a very long time to launch, to open/save files, or is generally slow to use.

Cause

Three possible causes for this are:

  1. The presence of older Clicker resources in the Shared Clicker Files folder, particularly those designed for Clicker 4.
  2. A Media Library has been registered to a location containing a very large amount of data.
  3. The machine's hardware specification fails to meet, or is close, to the minimum specification required to run Clicker 6.

Resolution

Remove older resources from Shared Clicker Files

If Clicker 6 is acting slowly on all the machines in a networked installation, then this is likely the cause as they all point to the same Shared Clicker Files folder, which is based locally on a standalone installation.

a) Whichever your installation type, you can learn the location of your Shared Clicker Files in Clicker 6 by opening the Options menu, selecting Program Management and then opening the Folder Locations tab. Browse to this location in Windows Explorer or Finder.

b) The best way of identifying which resources are problematic is to move the entire contents of the Shared Clicker Files folder (except for the folders named !Examples, !Users and _ResourcesC6) to another location such as your desktop. Start Clicker 6 to see if it performs more quickly.

c) Move the resource files/folders back into the Shared Clicker Files folder individually to see which causes Clicker 6 to slow down again. Clicker 4 resources should not be added back as they are incompatible. These are identifiable by their file extension - .clk. If you can't see file extensions, see here to enable them on Windows.

Choose Media Library locations that contain a manageable amount of files

Every time Clicker 6 loads, it needs to scan all registered Media Libraries for new content to keep them updated. If a location has been registered as a Media Library that contains a very large number of files (particularly if it's a network share), then Clicker 6 may still be scanning this location in the background after it has started. This could impact performance until the scan has updated.

Therefore, do not register locations that will take time to scan thoroughly, such as your entire computer, or the root of a large mapped network drive. Be wary of adding network locations if connecting wirelessly.

Ensure your computer meets the minimum system requirements

As technology has moved on since we released Clicker 5, a computer that can run Clicker 5 may not necessarily be capable of running Clicker 6 satisfactorily. Clicker 6 has been completely redeveloped in an entirely new language in order to provide its many new features and improvements. While we always design our products to work with a wide range of machines, it is not feasible to continue to support outdated hardware.
