Nothing happens when I click 'Run Now' in LearningGrids World Direct

Applies To

  • Clicker 5 for Windows

  • Symptoms

When you are attempting to download and run grids from the LearningGrids World website, the Run Now button does not work.

    Cause

This issue occurs when your firewall or proxy server prevents the Clicker 5 program downloading resources from the Internet.

These Internet security systems are designed to block viruses, unsuitable files and content from being downloaded.

However there are times when they can block legitimate downloads.

Most Internet security systems will only allow your web browser, such as Internet Explorer, to download from the internet.

When you click on Run Now from LearningGrids World Direct, the Clicker 5 program makes a request to download information from the Internet.

As the Clicker 5 program is not a recognized web browser, the program is blocked from downloading.

    Resolution

You can resolve this problem by adding the Clicker 5 program to your list of trusted programs. The Clicker 5 program is:

    C:\Program Files\Crick Software\Clicker 5\Clicker 5.exe

If you’re unsure how to do this, or if this does not resolve the issue, please pass the following information to your ICT technician:

    Information for Network Administrators

Clicker 5 uses the default internet connection and proxy settings to connect to the internet. When a user downloads a resource from the LearningGrids World website the following happens:

    1. User clicks on the 'Run now' or download link.
    2. The users web browser requests the page http://www.learninggrids.com/ResourceStream.aspx?... (the exact URL will depend upon the resource you are downloading).
    3. If you are logged in to LearningGrids, the web server will respond by sending back the file to be downloaded. In the response the web server sets the mime content type in the HTTP header so that an application or web browser can determine how the file should be used.

Users may have difficulties downloading resources if unknown mime-types are being blocked either by a firewall or proxy server. The LearningGrids World website always uses standard internet protocols (HTTP on port 80) so you should be able to ensure that content is not blocked. If your firewall or web proxy is preventing files from being downloaded please try the following:

    Allow the following MIME types
You may need ensure the following MIME types are allowed through the firewall via HTTP for web site access and SMTP if you wish to allow these files to be emailed:

If possible, we recommend adding the wildcard application/vnd.crick.* if your firewall supports this. Or you can add each MIME type individually.

    .clkx   application/vnd.crick.clicker

    .clkk   application/vnd.crick.clicker.keyboard

    .clkp   application/vnd.crick.clicker.palette

    .clkt   application/vnd.crick.clicker.template

    .clkw   application/vnd.crick.clicker.wordbank

    .czp   application/vnd.crick.cloze.arc

    .wdoc application/vnd.crick.document

    .wbrx application/vnd.crick.writeonline.grid

These files do not contain any executable code, windows scripts or registry data.

Our resources for Clicker 5, WordBar and ClozePro use a .exe to copy files on to a computer. The files will have an application/octet-stream MIME type. We recommend only unblocking this MIME type for the website http://www.learninggrids.com

Add LearningGrids.com to your list of safe sites
If your web proxy or firewall allows you to specify safe websites please add a rule to allow the address www.learninggrids.com or add this address to your list of safe sites. If your firewall only supports IP addresses you can use our IP address instead 213.249.147.12. Only Crick Software web sites are hosted at the IP address. If you need to specify other information, the protocol is HTTP and port number is 80.

Mark the following URL as safe
When a user downloads a file from our website they always do so through the following URLs. To ensure these URLs are not blocked add a rule to always allow these URLs.

    Downloading from LearningGrids.com
    http://www.learninggrids.com/ResourceStream.aspx

    Uploading files to LearningGrids.com
    http://www.learninggrids.com/UploadResourcePage.aspx
